Picked up a digital SLR camera recently? Keen to move away from auto mode and need guidance on how the other settings work together? Maybe a one day workshop could be the answer we’re both looking for, and funny enough – a workshop is fast approaching!
The workshop will take place at Compton Verney on 26th March 2014, to be led by professional photographer Sally Crane. All you need is a DSLR and a packed lunch, although places can be reserved in the restaurant of course.
‘Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst’. – Henri Cartier-Bresson
If you’ll pardon the pun, the ‘focus’ of the workshop will be the landscape and garden at Compton Verney, which of course is presently bejewelled with Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin sculpture – such an amazing opportunity for any photographer, whether you’re into floral close-up images, sculpture or classical landscapes. Whatever the light conditions, there will be plenty of subject matter and occasion to test the techniques taught indoors, and time to display and review results – no pressure of course!
Sally Crane: “It is a bit like learning to drive a car, it all seems pretty daunting to begin with, having to think about the gears, the speed and the steering all at once and how they are related. Some people take to it very naturally once they understand the basics and others take much longer. You can make it simpler by driving an automatic and not having to think about the gears but then you’ll never have the same control as with a manual car. You can learn to drive without a proper driving instructor but it’s a lot easier and quicker when you work with someone who guides you through with an understanding of all the challenges and common mistakes”.
During the workshop there will be demonstrations and practical exercises to guide you through the basics of light, shutter speed, ISO and composition, and of course opportunity to venture out around the grounds and put theory into practice.
‘The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it’. – Ansel Adams
Last years workshop was oversubscribed, so please don’t leave it too late to book up! I too aim to charge up my DSLR and join the workshop for some much-needed tuition – who knows, if I’m happy with the results I might even add a few images to the new Compton Verney Grounds flickr group!
Cost of the workshop includes exhibition, collections and grounds admission. Tickets: £65 per workshop, to book call 01926 645 500.
Lastly, if you have a good understanding of DSLR photography already, watch out for our Intermediate Digital SLR Photography workshop on 11th June 2014 – it could take your photography to a new level!
Event plug over, thanks for enduring!
